Applied Leadership Skills

Leadership behaviour is distinct from being a leader. Anyone can practice leadership in any situation without having position or authority. Those in leadership positions do not necessarily have to practise leadership to retain their position. Leaders can be sustained by a range of factors which do not have to include merit or suitability.

Leaders whose position depends on common assent, either formal or tacit, must practice leadership to achieve results.

  • Up to four half-day or two one-day sessions spread over several weeks
    or delivered consecutively

  • Post session exercises, practise assignments, and reviews reinforce
learning and help establish best practice habits

  • Tools, templates, frameworks, and examples act as aid memoirs, save
time, and aid adoption of best practice methods

Whether you choose to lead, or have leadership demanded of you, one thing in particular soon becomes alarmingly apparent. People take what you say much more seriously. They take more account of everything you say, and the precise way you say it. Suggestions can easily be interpreted as commands. Helpful comments or humour may be misconstrued and perceived as criticism or even as insults. One of the burdens of leadership is that you no longer have leeway for speaking half-formed thoughts. Rightly or not, people expect more of you.
